The Ktunaxa people (pronounced as k-too-nah-ha), have woven the threads of their existence into this corner of the Kootenays for over 10,000 years. Fernie’s Ktunaxa name for this community is “Ȼaqahak”, which means ‘thick forest’ – a testament to the deep-rooted connection the Ktunaxa hold with nature. Their history unfolds, unstoppable and unending.
THE FERNIE LEDEND
Meet William Fernie, the city’s charismatic explorer who once encountered local Indigenous. He was utterly fascinated by the Chieftain’s daughter donning an exquisite necklace made up of coal stones. Subsequently, a pact was made between the chief and Fernie, promising to unveil the coal’s origin if Fernie wed his daughter. Without hesitation, Fernie consented, but he later broke his promise. Consequently, the heartbroken Indigenous princess cast a curse upon the valley where Fernie is nestled resulting in a series of unfortunate events including the catastrophic explosion at Coal Creek Mine in 1901, twin infernos that ravaged the town in 1904 and 1908, and a devastating flood in 1906. However, in the epoch of 1964, an enchanting ceremony took place that consecrated this resilient town, lifting the curse once and for all.
