The Castlegar Nordic Ski Club has been providing well maintained cross-country ski trails for over 50 years and operates the Paulson Cross-Country Ski Trails, near the Paulson Highway summit, between Castlegar and Christina Lake.
The trails are situated 32 km (20 mi) west of Castlegar on Highway 3, just west of the junction of Highways 3 and 3B at Nancy Greene Lake. There are parking lots at two trailheads along Highway 3 – named Glenmerry and Mud Lake. Skiers new to the club and beginner skiers are recommended to visit the farthest west Mud Lake trailhead.
The club grooms and tracks 45 kms (28 mi) of ski trails ranging from beginner to advanced levels, for mainly classic skiing but also some skate skiing opportunities. There are trails for skiers of all abilities, from beginners and young families to advanced level skiers, as well as ungroomed, backcountry trails.
The Viking Centre Lodge and four modern warming huts offer the opportunity for a variety of adventures from short hour-long skis to a full day outing. Trails wind through a mosaic of mixed coniferous forests and openings with a diversity of spectacular views.
The ski season usually starts by late November and runs until April. With the elevation range of 1,300 to 1,500+ metres, this trail network provides a long ski season with excellent snow conditions and a predominance of sunny days.
