Skinku¢ Treasures & Interpretive Centre

The Skinku¢ Treasures Shop operates from an outlet in the Tamarack Mall (1500 Cranbrook St) and features books, jewellery, purses, moccasins, housewares, giftware, beading supplies and many more Ktunaxa-made products as well as authentic items from other Indigenous artisans and companies.

Skinku¢ is Ktunaxa for ‘coyote’. Skinku¢ is an important figure for them and also a fitting character for gifts to delight friends.  The shop is a showcase of Indigenous contemporary art, culture and heritage.

The Ktunaxa Interpretive Centre is located at the St. Eugene Golf Resort Casino.
The Resort  is set on the banks of the St. Mary River between the cities Cranbrook & Kimberley. The Interpretive Centre is where Ktunaxa people come together to give visitors a taste of the rich heritage, mythology and culture. Guests are welcome to stop by to view the many historic artifacts, contemporary art, archival photographs and displays containing examples of traditional stone, bead, hide, wood and cloth work.

A Ktunaxa Interpretive Tour can be arranged which includes:

  • introduction to the Ktunaxa 12,000+ year history (30-45 minutes)
  • video presentation of ‘Survivor of the Redbrick School’ (35 minutes)
  • tour of the former residential school and church (1-1.5 hours)

The St. Eugene Mission Resort was constructed in 1910 and operated for 60 years as a residential school for Indigenous children.  In 2002, as a result of partnerships between Hotels and the Ktunaxa Kinbasket Tribal Council, the St. Eugene Mission was transformed into a modern full-service resort.

The Ktunaxa (pronounced ‘k-too-nah-ha’) people have occupied the lands adjacent to the Kootenay and Columbia Rives as well as the Arrow Lakes of British Columbia, Canada for more than 10,000 years.

The traditional territory of the Ktunaxa Nation covers approximately 70,000 square kilometres within the Kootenay Rockies region of southeastern British Columbia and historically included parts of Alberta, Montana, Washington and Idaho.  Read more.
